From the Stage to the Page
Conrad’s first professional credit had nothing to do with writing. At 14, he took a train to New York City to audition for a tour company staging a Broadway show, and he landed the role of one of Fagan’s Boys in the national tour of Oliver!. He continued acting in New York and regional theaters for years after that.
The shift toward writing came in 1980, when Conrad wrote the book, music, and lyrics for Ta-Dah!, a musical adaptation of Much Ado About Nothing that received a limited Off-Broadway run. That project marked the boundary between his performing years and a second, longer career as a writer.
Interactive Mysteries and Early Digital Work
Conrad entered the mystery genre through a format most writers never touched: interactive film. He designed and wrote Murder, Anyone? and Many Roads to Murder, which became two of the best-selling original programs on the Laserdisc format in the United States and Japan. Those projects pulled him deeper into puzzle-based storytelling.
The Laserdisc work led to commissions from Parker Brothers, Milton Bradley, and Hasbro, for whom he wrote dozens of solvable mystery games, among them Clue VCR and Clue VCR 2. He also served as creative director of Mysterynet.com, a website devoted to all things mystery, writing hundreds of short mysteries for the platform. During the same period he consulted on interactive mystery content for early internet services AOL and Prodigy, extending his reach into digital distribution.
Throughout the 1990s, Conrad was also a regular contributor of short stories to Alfred Hitchcock Mystery Magazine and Ellery Queen Mystery Magazine, two of the most prominent venues in American crime fiction. His 12 solve-it-yourself mystery books, published by Sterling Publishing for both youth and adult audiences, were translated into 13 languages.
Monk and Television
The path to Monk began in a bookstore. Andy Breckman, the creator of the series, found Conrad’s mystery books on the shelves and reached out. Conrad has described the call in Breckman’s own words: ‘I’ve been stealing your plots so I guess I should hire you.’ Conrad became one of the original writers on the USA Network series and stayed with it for all eight seasons, serving as co-executive producer during the final two.
His work on the franchise extended beyond the main series. He was head writer and executive producer of Little Monk, a webisode series that portrayed Adrian Monk as a ten-year-old. He also served as consulting producer and writer on the USA Network series White Collar.
Conrad co-wrote the television pilot Mr. and Mr. Nash with comedian Steve Martin. The project was not produced.
Novels and Awards
Conrad’s first novel in the Monk book series, Mr. Monk Helps Himself, won the Scribe Award for Best Novel of 2014. He subsequently launched the Callie McFee Mystery series, whose first entry, The Fixer’s Daughter, was a Barnes and Noble bestseller. That novel won both the 2022 Independent Press Award for Best Mystery and the 2022 NYC Big Book Award for Best Mystery Series.
The series continued with Sins of the Family and The Man on the Bench. The first two novels each won multiple awards. Conrad’s theatrical work has continued alongside his fiction: his first full-length comedy and mystery play, Home Exchange, premiered at the Waterfront Playhouse in Key West in May 2012, and his produced stage work also includes Quarantine for Two, described as a socially distanced dark comedy about the pandemic.
Personal Life
Conrad splits his time between Key West, Florida, and Vermont. He is married to Jeff Johnson, his partner of over 41 years, who co-authored Things Your Dog Doesn’t Want You to Know with him and serves on the board of the Florida Keys SPCA. Conrad has kept a dynasty of miniature schnauzers as pets dating back to the 1980s.
