Career

Whedon’s professional work spans television directing, feature film directing, screenwriting, and producing. His awards include the Hugo Award for Best Dramatic Presentation in both the Short Form and Long Form categories, the Nebula Award for Best Script, and the Prometheus Award Special Award.

The peak of his commercial reach came with The Avengers in 2012, which he directed. The film became the first in North American box-office history to earn more than $200 million across its opening three days, finishing that weekend at $207.4 million. He later returned to the superhero genre to oversee reshoots on Justice League.

Allegations and investigations

In 2017, Whedon’s ex-wife published an essay in The Wrap describing him as a hypocrite who had preached feminist ideals while conducting multiple secret affairs throughout their marriage. His representatives stated that her account contained inaccuracies.

In July 2020, actor Ray Fisher, who had appeared in Justice League, publicly accused Whedon of conduct he described as gross, abusive, and unprofessional during the film’s reshoots. WarnerMedia opened a formal investigation. The company issued a statement in December 2020 confirming that remedial action had been taken.

In February 2021, actress Charisma Carpenter released a public statement detailing her experience on the sets of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel. She alleged that Whedon referred to her as fat to colleagues while she was pregnant and fired her from Angel after she gave birth. Her statement used the phrase ‘casually cruel’ to characterize his behavior on set.
