Hogwarts Castle

Hogwarts Castle is the fictional home of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, the central institution of J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter universe. Placed by Rowling in the Highlands of Scotland, the castle is described as a “huge, rambling, quite scary-looking castle, with a jumble of towers and battlements.” On screen, it was never a single real building: the version seen across eight films was assembled from a 1:24 scale physical model, CGI, and multiple real locations throughout the United Kingdom. That physical model alone required a team of 86 artists for its first construction and accumulated over 74 years of combined man-hours across all eight productions.

The fictional castle

Within the Harry Potter story, Hogwarts Castle is located in the Highlands of Scotland, in the region of Argyll. Its founding is placed at the year 1000. The school’s coat of arms carries the Latin motto “Draco dormiens nunquam titillandus,” which translates as “Never tickle a sleeping dragon.” Rowling has said she chose that phrase because she wanted good practical advice on the shield rather than a conventional inspirational quote.

Rowling has also stated that she has never drawn a floor plan of the castle, explaining that it would be difficult for even the most skilled architect to draw, owing to the fact that the staircases and the rooms keep moving. That deliberate architectural instability is built into the fiction itself.

Building the on-screen castle

Production designer Stuart Craig was responsible for the visual design of Hogwarts Castle across all eight Harry Potter films. Drawing on Oxford and Cambridge universities and on great European Gothic cathedrals, Craig aimed for what he described as a “medieval gothic style.” Craig was an Oscar-winning designer, and he also helped shape The Wizarding World of Harry Potter theme park lands at Universal, bringing his designs for Hogsmeade village and Hogwarts Castle into a physical environment visitors could walk through. Craig died on 7 September 2025 at the age of 83.

The on-screen castle was never filmed as a single real structure. Instead, production combined a large-scale physical model, computer-generated imagery, and shoots at several real locations across the United Kingdom. Real locations included Alnwick Castle in Northumberland, whose courtyards also appear in miniature form on the model itself; the cloisters of Lacock Abbey, a 13th-century former abbey in Wiltshire now managed by the National Trust, which doubled as Hogwarts halls and classrooms in the early films; and both Duke Humfrey’s Library and the Divinity School of the Bodleian Library at Oxford University, which were used for Hogwarts interiors including the castle’s hospital wing.

The 1:24 scale model built for Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone sits at nearly 50 feet in diameter. Its surface contains over 2,500 fibre optic lights, installed to simulate the glow of lanterns and torches and to create the impression of students moving through the hallways. To add authenticity, artists incorporated miniature reproductions of real courtyards from Alnwick Castle and Durham Cathedral into the model. The total investment in building and reworking the model across all eight productions comes to over 74 years of combined man-hours.

The model on public display

The 1:24 scale Hogwarts Castle model is now on permanent display at the Warner Bros. Studio Tour London: The Making of Harry Potter, located at Leavesden, near Watford. The tour opened on 31 March 2012, and the model serves as its grand finale.

Each year the studio runs a seasonal event called “Hogwarts in the Snow,” during which the model is blanketed with filmmaking snow using the same techniques applied during original production.

The HBO television series

A new Harry Potter television series produced by HBO is scheduled to premiere on December 25, 2026, on HBO and HBO Max. The series, which begins with Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, features a newly designed Hogwarts Castle with a different arrangement of towers and architectural features from the version seen in the films.

On October 29, 2026, HBO released the first official poster for the series. It showed a redesigned Hogwarts Castle reflected in the glasses of actor Dominic McLaughlin, who plays Harry Potter, marking the first public reveal of the new castle design.
