Early Life and Education
Anders grew up in Mansfield, Connecticut, a small town near Storrs in the eastern part of the state. She described herself as ‘a visibly queer kid with a learning disability,’ and she credits an elementary school teacher named Lynn Pennington with identifying her as a daydreamer and setting her on the path to becoming a writer.
She went on to study English and Asian Literature at the University of Cambridge in England. During her time there, she also spent a period studying abroad in China, an experience that broadened the cultural range her fiction would later draw on.
Beginnings in Genre Fiction and Publishing
Her first published piece of genre fiction, ‘Skin Switch,’ appeared in Maelstrom Speculative Fiction in January 1999, credited to the byline Charles Anders. Before settling on her full name, her early work moved through two versions of her name, appearing first as Charles Anders and then as Charlie Anders.
Alongside her fiction, Anders became an active force in queer publishing. She was a member of the editorial staff of Anything That Moves, an influential bisexual magazine, and contributed to other queer projects including Black Sheets/Black Books. She also co-organized the Cross-Gender Caravan, a national transgender and genderqueer author tour. On the lighter side, she created the satirical website GodHatesFigs.com, which collected multiple ‘best of the web’ awards.
Other Magazine and io9
In 2002, Anders and Annalee Newitz co-founded Other magazine, which billed itself as ‘the magazine of pop culture and politics for the new outcasts.’ Anders served as publisher until 2007.
She held that position until April 2016, when she stepped back from the role to concentrate on writing novels.
Short Fiction
Anders’s short fiction has appeared in a wide range of venues and anthologies, including a story contributed to Fourteen Days, a collaborative novel edited by Margaret Atwood and Douglas Preston. Her short story ‘Don’t Press Charges and I Won’t Sue,’ first published in the Boston Review Global Dystopias anthology in October 2017, won the 2018 Theodore A. Sturgeon Memorial Award.
Her short story ‘Six Months, Three Days’ attracted attention beyond the page when, in 2013, NBC put a television adaptation into development. The project involved actor Krysten Ritter, writer Eric Garcia, and producer David Janollari.
She has also served as a juror for both the James Tiptree Jr. Award and the Lambda Literary Award, contributing to the genre community in an evaluative role as well as a creative one.
Novels and the Writing Advice Book
Her novel writing earned her the Nebula Award for Best Novel, cementing her place among the leading figures of contemporary American science fiction. Her writing advice book, Never Say You Can’t Survive: How to Get Through Hard Times by Making Up Stories, won the 2022 Hugo Award for Best Related Work.
Her most recent novel, Lessons in Magic and Disaster, was published by Tor Books on August 19, 2025.
Marvel Comics: Escapade
In June 2022, Anders co-created a new Marvel Comics character: Shela Sexton, a transgender mutant superhero who goes by the name Escapade. She developed the character with artists Ro Stein and Ted Brandt, and Escapade debuted in Marvel’s Voices: Pride #1. The character’s mutant ability is the power to temporarily trade places, physically or in terms of status, skills, or powers, with anyone within approximately six or seven feet.
Recognition and Awards
Over the course of her career, Anders has accumulated a varied set of awards. In addition to the Nebula, Hugo (for both a novelette and for Best Related Work), Lambda Literary, and Locus awards, she won the Emperor Norton Award in 2009, given for ‘extraordinary invention and creativity unhindered by the constraints of paltry reason,’ in recognition of her combined work on Writers With Drinks and io9. Her short story ‘Don’t Press Charges and I Won’t Sue’ won the 2018 Theodore A. Sturgeon Memorial Award.
